چکیده

In this paper we extend the geometric binary search tree (BST) model of Demaine, Harmon, Iacono, Kane, and Pǎtraşcu (DHIKP) to accommodate for insertions and deletions. Within this extended model, we study the online Greedy BST algorithm introduced by DHIKP. Greedy BST is known to be equivalent to a maximally greedy (but inherently offline) algorithm introduced independently by Lucas in 1988 and Munro in 2000, conjectured to be dynamically optimal. With the application of forbidden-submatrix theory, we prove a quasilinear upper bound on the performance of Greedy BST on deque sequences. It has been conjectured (Tarjan, 1985) that splay trees (Sleator and Tarjan, 1983) can serve such sequences in linear time. Currently neither splay trees, nor other general-purpose BST algorithms are known to fulfill this requirement. As a special case, we show that Greedy BST can serve output-restricted deque sequences in linear time. A similar result is known for splay trees (Tarjan, 1985; Elmasry, 2004). As a further application of the insert-delete model, we give a simple proof that, given a set U of permutations of [n], the access cost of any BST algorithm is Ω(log |U | + n) on “most” of the permutations from U. In particular, this implies that the access cost for a random permutation of [n] is Ω(n log n) with high probability. Besides the splay tree noted before, Greedy BST has recently emerged as a plausible candidate for dynamic optimality. Compared to splay trees, much less effort has gone into analyzing Greedy BST. Our work is intended as a step towards a full understanding of Greedy BST, and we remark that forbidden-submatrix arguments seem particularly well suited for carrying out this program.

Deque-Free Work-Optimal Parallel STL Algorithms

This paper presents provable work-optimal parallelizations of STL (Standard Template Library) algorithms based on the workstealing technique. Unlike previous approaches where a deque for each processor is typically used to locally store ready tasks and where a processor that runs out of work steals a ready task from the deque of a randomly selected processor, the current paper instead presents ...

On the Existence of Almost Greedy Bases in Banach Spaces

We consider several greedy conditions for bases in Banach spaces that arise naturally in the study of the Thresholding Greedy Algorithm (TGA). In particular, we continue the study of almost greedy bases begun in [3]. We show that almost greedy bases are essentially optimal for n-term approximation when the TGA is modified to include a Chebyshev approximation. We prove that if a Banach space X h...

Lace: Non-blocking Split Deque for Work-Stealing

Work-stealing is an efficient method to implement load balancing in fine-grained task parallelism. Typically, concurrent deques are used for this purpose. A disadvantage of many concurrent deques is that they require expensive memory fences for local deque operations. In this paper, we propose a new non-blocking work-stealing deque based on the split task queue. Our design uses a dynamic split ...

Heuristic and exact algorithms for Generalized Bin Covering Problem

In this paper, we study the Generalized Bin Covering problem. For this problem an exact algorithm is introduced which can nd optimal solution for small scale instances. To nd a solution near optimal for large scale instances, a heuristic algorithm has been proposed. By computational experiments, the eciency of the heuristic algorithm is assessed.

An Iterated Greedy Algorithm for Flexible Flow Lines with Sequence Dependent Setup Times to Minimize Total Weighted Completion Time

This paper explores the flexile flow lines where setup times are sequence- dependent. The optimization criterion is the minimization of total weighted completion time. We propose an iterated greedy algorithm (IGA) to tackle the problem. An experimental evaluation is conducted to evaluate the proposed algorithm and, then, the obtained results of IGA are compared against those of some other exist...
